In today’s fast-changing world on the internet, even well-known websites are seeing changes from Google’s latest updates. MailOnline, a big worldwide news company, just reported that after Google added AI summaries to the search results, their click-through rates dropped by almost 60%. This shift is changing the way people look for and interact with news on the internet, and it matters for SEO and online advertising.
MailOnline reports a significant reduction in people clicking from Google searches through to its site. MailOnline’s SEO and editorial ecommerce director, Carly Steven, explained that Google’s new AI Overviews are leading to a decline in traffic despite MailOnline coming first on searches.
AI Overviews make it easy to find quick, machine-generated summaries right at the top of Google’s results. As a result, users can often find their answers right within the search results without needing to visit the website. Data from MailOnline found that desktop CTR dropped from 13% to 4.6% and mobile CTR from 20% to 6.8% as a result of AI Overviews. In some instances, websites saw their traffic drop from thousands to just hundreds the very next day.
It’s important because it reflects a big change in how users engage with search results. It could lead to major losses in website visitors for news portals, which might affect their business models.
At the World News Media Congress arranged by WAN-IFRA, Carly Steven, MailOnline’s SEO and editorial ecommerce director, pointed out that the falling CTR for Google’s AI Overviews was shocking. She described the extent of the damage with specific numbers.
Steven used a real-life case study to describe the concept. Noor Alfallah news resulted in MailOnline ranking number one and getting close to 6,000 clicks. Clicks on the website declined to just 100 after the AI Overview was included at the top of the search results.
She warned users about the new AI Mode on Google, just like Bard, because it offers complete answers in the search results. Steven cautioned:
“If AI Mode becomes the default experience, I don’t think anyone is going to be clicking on those links. It just answers the query right there. Referral traffic from Google is definitely in trouble.”
For people working in SEO and digital marketing, this update should serve as a warning. With AI Overviews, Google is lowering the appearances and traffic to traditional organic search listings that have helped drive growth.
In order to stay afloat and do well with all these changes, publishers and marketers should pay attention to the following points:
Final Thoughts - 56% CTR Drop
Google’s AI Overviews are a big change for news sites and people who write things online, since they can make it much harder for those sites to show up in regular search results. MailOnline’s surprising 56% drop in click-through rate proves that these things really matter in the advertising business. The future belongs to websites that share real, original, and clear content, and this is the kind of stuff that computers still can’t copy or replace.
For SEO and marketing teams, being able to keep up with changes fast and always delivering good quality content and keeping customers’ trust is no longer just nice to have. it’s important to understand how things work if you want your site to do well in search results now.
