Google has recently rolled out a new AI overview feature. It generates clickable links in a summary, taking users back to related Google Search results. The purpose is to improve the user experience by minimizing manual interventions in query refinements. It entirely focuses on gently changing user behavior concerning information that lives online.
From the past testing, Google is now officially making hyperlinked terms in AI Overviews. These allow users to dive deeper into subjects by taking them to new search results pages on Google. As a Google spokesperson disclosed, here's the reason for the change:
“To help people more easily explore topics and discover relevant websites, we’ve added links to some terms within AI Overviews when our systems determine it might be useful.”
It works the same way as the "People also search for" feature but now has been integrated with AI content, which makes it much more dynamic and responds to user behavior more.

The user behavior data showed that users habitually follow up with some searches after they read the AI Overview. The relevant links embedded directly into the content would cut the extra step for the user, which Google says leads to a better overall search experience. It also claims that users had found the new experience more helpful and efficient.
Google also stated that its systems would still prefer linking to some third-party sites if gets some useful information there. However, many new links are driving more Google Search results than external content
From a user perspective, this update simplifies studying something in more detail without retyping queries. the links give a short route to related results for search queries linked to health conditions, historical events, and product purchases
It is also designed to reduce friction. Rather than reading a summary and trying to remember what to search for next, users can click and head straight into context.

The information access is getting faster yet brings some challenges for publishers. If more traffic is retained within Google's ecosystem by redirecting users to more search result pages instead of external websites, it could mean fewer clicks for content creators.
Some SEO experts say this part might align with a larger strategy of pushing advertisement exposure, especially on heavier sponsored listings that result in pages but are comparatively lighter with AI Overviews.
Nevertheless, Google still stands by the claim that this has broadened links to the broader web and works to wait for visibility towards the publisher within this new search experience.
This update is currently live in English for users in the United States, available on both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search.
Final Thoughts
Adding links within AI Overviews by Google is another step toward making search interactive and intuitive. This is useful to real users, but simultaneously, it changes the ecosystem for publishers and SEOs and solidifies the need for them to devise content strategies in the new, increasingly AI-controlled search scenario.
