Google Local Services Ads are the listings that appear right at the top of the results for local service searches, above the standard text ads and the map pack. They show your business name, rating, review count, service area and a verification badge, and the customer calls or messages you straight from the listing. You are charged per lead, not per click.

They are a different product from standard Google Ads in almost every way that matters. There are no keywords: Google decides when to show you based on your service categories, your location, your reviews, your response rate and your budget. There is no landing page, because the listing is the destination. And you can contest a lead that was never a real enquiry and get the charge refunded, which has no equivalent anywhere else in paid search.

They are also the product most people mean when they talk about Google Business Profile ads, or Google My Business ads as it was called before the 2022 rename. The profile and the ads are connected — your Business Profile feeds the listing — but the profile itself is free, and the advertising on top of it is Local Services Ads.

  • Verification first: licence, insurance and background checks completed so the badge can be issued and the ads can run
  • Categories and service area built around profitable jobs: not every job type you are technically able to do
  • Reviews and response time managed: both feed the ranking, and both are things most businesses leave to chance
  • Leads disputed every week: wrong numbers, out-of-area callers and job types you do not serve should not be billed
  • Reported in cost per booked job: not cost per lead, because a lead that never books is not a result

Running Local Services Ads alongside Search or Performance Max? Our Google Ads management services cover the whole account, and the Google Ads audit is where most engagements start.

Why Local Service Businesses Are Moving Budget Here

  • The placement is above everything else. Local Services Ads appear above the text ads and the map pack, in the position customers look at first on a phone.
  • You pay for leads, not traffic. Charges are per contact rather than per click, which changes the arithmetic for businesses whose job values are high and whose click costs have risen.
  • The badge does the reassurance for you. A verified badge next to your name settles the trust question before a customer has read anything about you.
  • Bad leads are refundable. No other paid channel lets you contest a charge for a wrong number or an out-of-area caller, and most businesses never claim it.
  • Reviews finally have a direct revenue effect. Your review score and count feed the ad ranking, so review work stops being a vague brand activity and starts moving lead volume.

Local Services Ads Case Studies

EDITOR NOTE (remove before publishing): NONE OF THE EXISTING CASE STUDIES FIT THIS PAGE. The three published accounts — the boat rental marketplace, the online bookstore and the fitness equipment retailer — are a travel marketplace and two ecommerce stores, none of them eligible for Local Services Ads, which serve home and professional services in a limited set of countries. Using any of them here would be an obvious mismatch to anyone who knows the product. Leave this section out of the first release rather than filling it, and add it when a real LSA account exists. The metrics that matter when one does: cost per booked job (not cost per lead), dispute success rate, review score movement, and the share of leads that were in-area and in-category.

H3: Case Study 1: [Home services trade, US metro]

H4: H4: [Result] Cost Per Booked Job From Local Services Ads

Client:

[Trade, service area, team size]

Challenge:

[e.g. unverified profile, too many job categories switched on, no dispute process, leads arriving outside the service area]

Solutions:

  • [Verification completed and badge issued — what the process involved]
  • [How categories and service area were narrowed to profitable jobs]
  • [Review and response-time programme put in place]
  • [Weekly dispute routine and what it recovered]

Results ([date range]):

  • [Cost per booked job, with monthly budget alongside it]
  • [Lead volume and the share that were in-area and in-category]
  • [Disputed leads refunded, as a share of total spend]

H3: Case Study 2: [Professional services firm, Google Screened]

H4: H4: [Result] After Google Screened Verification and Category Cleanup

Client:

[Practice area, market]

Challenge:

[e.g. competing on standard search ads at high cost per click with no verification badge]

Solutions:

  • [three bullets, as above]

Results ([date range]):

  • [cost per qualified enquiry, with spend context]

What Our Local Services Ads Management Covers

Eight areas of work. The first two decide whether your ads can run at all; the rest decide what a booked job ends up costing you.

Google Guaranteed and Google Screened Verification, Managed

google my business ads

Nothing runs until you are verified, and the process stops more applications than it should — usually over a licence that has lapsed, insurance documentation that does not match the business name, or background checks that were started and never finished. We run the application, chase what is outstanding, and fix rejections rather than resubmitting the same paperwork.

  • Business, licence and insurance documentation prepared and submitted in the form Google accepts
  • Background checks coordinated for the business and, where required, for individual staff
  • Rejections diagnosed and corrected, instead of resubmitted unchanged
  • Re-verification tracked ahead of expiry so the badge never lapses mid-campaign

Why Local Service Businesses Choose Us as Their Local Services Ads Agency

Verification Handled, Including the Rejections

Verification Handled, Including the Rejections

We run the application and fix what comes back rejected, rather than handing you a checklist and waiting.

Disputes Filed Every Week

Disputes Filed Every Week

Bad leads are contested inside the window as a routine, not when someone remembers. It is money already spent that you can get back.

Categories Chosen on Job Value

Categories Chosen on Job Value

We ask what each job is worth before switching anything on, because lead prices do not scale down for small jobs.

We Will Tell You About the Missed Calls

We Will Tell You About the Missed Calls

Unanswered leads are reported with their cost attached. It is an uncomfortable number and it is usually the biggest one on the page.

Reviews Treated as a Ranking Factor

Reviews Treated as a Ranking Factor

Review score and volume move your position here, so review work is part of the campaign rather than a separate marketing project.

Honest About the Badge

Google decides who gets verified. We manage the process properly and we do not pretend to control the outcome.

How We Run Local Services Ads: The GROWTH Method

This channel is won on operations as much as settings, so the sequence starts with what your business can actually deliver and ends with the budget following it.

Gather Your Licences, Job Values and Real Capacity

google local services ads

Everything downstream depends on three things: whether you can be verified, what a job is worth, and how many leads you can genuinely answer.

  • Licence, insurance and background check documentation collected and checked before the application goes in.
  • Average job value by category established, so category selection is a commercial decision rather than a list of capabilities.
  • Weekly lead capacity agreed with you, because unanswered leads cost ranking as well as money.
  • Current performance reviewed where ads already run, using our Google Ads audit

Local Services Ads vs Google Ads: Which Should You Run?

They are different products and most local service businesses eventually run both. Local Services Ads sit higher on the page, charge per lead, require verification and give you very little control over targeting. Standard Google Ads sit below them, charge per click, need no verification and let you control keywords, ad copy, landing pages and audiences precisely.

The practical split is that Local Services Ads handle the high-intent "plumber near me" demand where the badge and the placement do the work, and Search handles everything LSAs cannot reach: specific services, brand defence, longer research queries and anything outside the eligible categories. Where budget is limited, we usually start with Local Services Ads if you are eligible, because the lead pricing is easier to judge, then add Search once the cost per booked job is known.

Local Services Ads Are Moving Into Google Ads

Google has begun moving Local Services Ads into the main Google Ads interface, managed as a pay-per-lead Performance Max campaign type, with the standalone Local Services Ads dashboard being retired. The ads themselves still appear only on Search and Maps, campaigns stay keywordless, and billing remains per valid lead. Budgets, settings and assets transfer automatically, but historical reporting does not, so exporting it before the migration is worth doing.

For most businesses this is a change of interface rather than a change of product, but it does mean Local Services Ads now sit in the same account as your other campaigns, which makes comparing them considerably easier. If your account is being migrated and nobody has exported the old reporting, that is the one thing worth doing this week.

Frequently AskedQuestions

➡️

H3: How Much Do Google Local Services Ads Cost?

You pay per lead rather than per click, and the price of a lead varies by trade, by market and by how many verified competitors you have locally. Rather than quoting an average that would not apply to you, we estimate from your own job values: if a booked job is worth $600 in gross profit and one in three leads books, a $90 lead is comfortable and a $250 lead is not. You set a weekly budget, and Google charges against it as leads come in.

➡️

H3: How Do I Get Google Guaranteed?

Confirm your category and country are eligible, submit current licence and insurance documentation matching your business name, complete the background checks Google runs through a third-party provider, and build out your profile and campaign while verification is processing. Most delays come from documentation that does not match the business name or background checks that were started and never finished. We run the process and correct rejections rather than resubmitting the same paperwork.

➡️

H3: What Is the Difference Between Local Services Ads and Google Ads?

Local Services Ads appear above the standard text ads, charge per lead, require verification and have no keywords or landing pages. Google Ads sit below them, charge per click, need no verification and give you precise control over keywords, copy and targeting. Most local service businesses run both, with LSAs taking the high-intent local demand and Search covering everything the eligible categories do not.

➡️

H3: Are Google Business Profile Ads the Same as Local Services Ads?

Effectively, yes — "Google Business Profile ads" is how many people describe Local Services Ads, and "Google My Business ads" is the same thing under the name used before the 2022 rename. Strictly, your Google Business Profile is the free listing, and Local Services Ads are the paid placement that draws on it. If someone has quoted you for "Business Profile ads", ask which they mean: profile optimisation is an SEO service, and Local Services Ads are advertising.

➡️

H3: What Is Google Screened and How Is It Different From Google Guaranteed?

Google Screened is the verification programme for professional services such as legal and financial firms, covering licence checks for the firm and its professionals plus background screening. Google Guaranteed covers home services and adds a money-back guarantee for work booked through the ad, up to a coverage limit. Both produce a badge in the listing; only Google Guaranteed carries the guarantee.

➡️

H3: Can I Get a Refund for Bad Leads?

Yes, and it is one of the most under-used features of the product. Wrong numbers, spam, leads outside your service area and enquiries for job types you do not serve can all be disputed, provided it is done within the window with the right reason attached. We review every lead weekly and file disputes as a routine, then adjust the settings causing the pattern.

➡️

H3: How Is My Ranking in Local Services Ads Decided?

It is not a straightforward auction. Your review score and review count, how quickly you respond to leads, your proximity to the searcher, your business hours and your budget all contribute. That means ranking improves through operational habits as much as advertising settings, which is why review generation and response time are part of how we manage the channel.

➡️

H3: Which Trades and Professions Are Eligible?

The programme covers a defined list of home and professional service categories that varies by country, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, locksmith, cleaning and pest control on the home services side, and legal, financial and real estate under Google Screened. Tell us your trade and market and we will confirm eligibility, usually within a day.

➡️

H3: Do I Need a Website to Run Local Services Ads?

Not in the way you do for standard Google Ads, because the listing is the destination and customers contact you from it directly. A website still helps, since customers often check one before calling, but the absence of a good site is not a reason to delay getting verified.

➡️

H3: What Happens to My Account Now That Local Services Ads Are Moving Into Google Ads?

Google is migrating Local Services Ads into the main Google Ads interface as a pay-per-lead campaign type, with budgets, settings and assets transferring automatically. Historical reporting does not transfer, so export it beforehand. The ads, the placements and the per-lead billing stay as they are.
